Surgeon General

Surgeon General can have several different meanings.

In the United States:

• The Surgeon General of the United States is the head of the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and thus the leading spokesperson on matters of public health in the U.S. government.
• Many U.S. states also have a Surgeon General serving a similar role.
• The medical services of the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Air Force are each headed by a Surgeon General:
  • Surgeon General of the United States Army
  • Surgeon General of the United States Navy
  • Surgeon General of the United States Air Force

In the United Kingdom:

• The Surgeon-General is the senior medical officer of the British Armed Forces; the post is held by the senior of the three individual service medical directors.
• The British equivalent of the Surgeon General of the United States is the Chief Medical Officer.

In the Republic of Ireland:

• The Republic of Ireland equivalent of the Surgeon General of the United States is the Chief Medical Officer.
