The binomial name of this species is listed as:
- "Helarctos malayanus (Raffles, 1821)"
Raffles links to a disambig page. I suspect that the Raffles being referred to here is Thomas Stamford Raffles, but I have been unable to find a reference to definitively verify this.

How come the IUCN red list status is not according to SSC (http://www.iucnredlist.org/search/details.php/9760/all). They list this bear as DD. Tbjornstad 08:44, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
