Sukhona River

Sukhona (Russian: Сухона) is a river in the European part of Russia, tributary to the Northern Dvina. Its length is 558 km. The area of its basin is 50,300 km². Its source is the Kubena Lake, in Vologda Oblast. It flows roughly in north-eastern direction. The Sukhona River freezes up in late October - November and stays under the ice until late April - early May. Towns on the river Sukhona include Sokol and Totma. The Sukhona joins the river Yug in Velikiy Ustyug, thus forming the Northern Dvina.
