Stuart Thomas Elliott (born 27 August 1977 in London, England) is an English footballer, who is currently playing for Grays Athletic.

Elliott started his career as a schoolboy at Arsenal, and signed a professional contract with Newcastle United in 1995 after being released by the club. He spent five years with the club, during which time he was loaned out seven times. He never made a first-team appearance for Newcastle, but appeared on the bench on five occasions and eventually became captain of the reserve side.

He left the club in 2000 to join Darlington, where he played for most of the 2000–01 season before joining Plymouth Argyle in 2001. He eventually dropped down to non-league football with Durham City and Scarborough, before making a brief return to the Football League with Exeter City in 2002. Since then, he has played in non-league football, with Northwich Victoria and York City before joining Grays Athletic in May 2008.

[edit] Career

Elliott started his career as a schoolboy with Arsenal in 1993,[1] but was released by the club at the age of fifteen.[2] He was then offered an apprenticeship with Newcastle United,[2] where he was on the professional books for five years from 1995 until 2000, during which he was sent out on loan on seven occasions.[3] He was named on the bench for the first time for Newcastle in a 2–2 draw with Southampton on 18 January 1997.[1][4] His first loan came in February 1997 when he joined Hull City,[3] where he was sent off in the 90th minute in his debut in a 1–1 draw with Northampton Town on 1 March 1997.[1] He made three appearances for Hull before returning to Newcastle in March.[3]

He joined Swindon Town on loan in February 1998,[3] making his debut in a 3–1 defeat to Manchester City in the First Division on 21 February 1988.[5] He made two appearances during this spell with Swindon.[6] The 1998–99 season saw Elliott loaned out to three clubs, with the first being Gillingham for a month in October 1998.[3] He made five appearances in the Second Division for them before his loan ended in November.[3] A spell at Hartlepool United in the Third Division followed, whom he joined in January 1999.[3] He made five appearances for the club.[7] He joined Wrexham in March,[3] and made his debut in their 3–2 defeat to Wigan Athletic in the Football League Trophy Northern final second leg on 23 March 1999.[8] He made 10 appearances in the Second Division for the club.[9]

Bournemouth signed him on loan in December 1999,[3] where he made eight Second Division appearances during the 1999–2000 season.[10] His final loan spell was with Stockport County in February, where he played until the end of the season,[3] making five appearances in the First Division.[11] During his time at Newcastle, he was named as a substitute in the fist-team on six occasions, but never made it onto the pitch.[1] Elliott, however, was a regular in the reserve team and eventually became the team's captain.[1] His final Newcastle reserve game saw him win the Northumberland Senior Cup for the second time, after scoring a goal from 35 yards in the final against Newcastle Blue Star in May 2000.[1]

After failing to break into the Newcastle first-team, Elliott joined Third Division side Darlington in July 2000.[1][12] He made his debut for the club in a 1–1 draw with Rochdale on 12 August 2000.[13] His first goal in the professional game came against First Division side Nottingham Forest in a first round first-leg League Cup tie on 22 August 2000.[14][15] In the second-leg, Elliott netted a 50 yard strike from the centre circle in the 85th minute, which gave Darlington a 2–1 win over Forest, and 4–3 on aggregrate.[16][17][18] He managed to make 33 appearances and score four goals in all competitions before moving to Plymouth Argyle on a free transfer in March 2001.[19][20] Elliott's debut for the team came in a 3–0 win over Third Division leaders Chesterfield on 10 March 2001 and finished the season with 12 appearances for Plymouth.[21][22]

He joined Carlisle United for a month's trial in August and won a short-term contract with the club.[23][24] His debut came in a 0–0 draw with Leyton Orient in the Third Division on 18 August 2001.[25] After making seven appearances for the side,[26] Elliott was released after not being offered a new contract by the club and signed for Durham City in October.[27] Only several days later, he turned out for non-league side Scarborough, where he made his debut in a 2–2 draw against Boston United in the Conference National on 6 October 2001.[28] He was offered a week-long trial with Exeter City in January 2002,[29] and joined the side on a non-contract basis in February after making nine appearances and scoring one goal for Scarborough.[3] He made one appearance for Exeter,[30] which was as a substitute in a 2–1 victory against Macclesfield Town in the Third Division on 2 February 2002.[31]

Elliott again dropped down to non-league football when he signed for Merthyr Tydfil of the Southern League on non-contract terms in April,[1] but did not feature for the side during the remainder of the 2001–02 season.[32] His next destination was Halifax Town in the Conference National in August,[33] making 12 appearances before being released and joining Northern Premier League side Harrogate Town in March 2003.[34][35] His first game came against Barrow on 15 March 2003 and finished the season with eight appearances for them.[36][37] Elliott joined Harrow Borough in the Isthmian League in August,[38] where he made his debut in a 3–2 defeat against Hitchin Town on 16 August 2003.[39] He was released by the club in January 2004 and subsequently signed for fellow Isthmian League side Waltham Forest after making 14 appearances and scoring one goal for Harrow.[40][41]

He signed for Gateshead in April 2005 and scored on his league debut in a 3–2 defeat against Burscough on 23 April 2005.[1][42] Elliott finished the 2004–05 season with three appearances and one goal for Gateshead before joining newly relegated Conference North side Northwich Victoria in June 2005.[1][43][44] During the club's 2–1 win over Woking, Elliott scored the first goal, a victory which ensured a lucrative FA Cup tie with Premier League side Sunderland.[45] The 2005–06 season saw him finally completed an entire season with one team, during which he made 39 appearances and scored three goals.[46]

Elliott was appointed club captain for the 2006–07 season, after assisting the club in their instant return to the Conference National.[47] He was charged in December 2006 of using racially-aggravated abusive language towards Halifax Town midfielder Tyrone Thompson in a match on 4 November 2006,[48] which was later cleared of in April 2007.[49] Following the completion of the 2006–07 season, he was not named on the club's retained list,[50] during which he made 27 appearances and scored one goal.[51]

The opportunity arose to join York City in July 2007 and despite the efforts of Northwich chairman Mike Connett,[52] Elliott signed for the side, along with former Northwich player Paul Brayson.[53] He was sent off during his York debut against Cambridge United on 11 August 2007 and was also sent off on 12 April 2008 against Woking along with Tom Evans and Darren Craddock.[54] which resulted in him receiving a three-match ban.[55] Despite being a regular in the side, Elliott was released at the end of his first season with the club,[56] after which he was signed by Grays Athletic on a one-year deal.[57]
