[edit] Crossbow

I can't find anything about a 10th century Norse crossbow and I can't find this book you use as a reference. Do you have some other sources as well? Haukur 20:35, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

I found it on a website, which gave this book as its source,homepages.tesco/~tinyclanger/fitzgreyve/albini_equipment_crossbows-lockbow.htm or just google "skane lockbow". The battle of Hjorongavagr is also well known- as I am sure you know- and there may be information from accounts of this too

Streona 13:06, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

That page doesn't mention the battle of Hjörungavágr. What's your source for that? Haukur —Preceding comment was added at 18:36, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Chronology of the Crossbow from http/www.thebeckoning.com/medieval/crossbow/chronology This in turn cites W.F.Paterson "A guide to the Crossbow" Society of Antiquary Archers,1990- which is why I originally cited it on the stub, but has since been removed.Streona 21:58, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Cross04.jpg

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Cross04.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI 15:47, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Lane End, Isle of Wight

A tag has been placed on Lane End, Isle of Wight, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the article and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. --stephenw32768<user page><talk> 09:58, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Little context in Hale Common

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Hale Common, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Hale Common is very short providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Hale Common, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. [edit] Your Isle of Wight articles

Hi, thanks for the message you left me. You accidentally left it on my user page though, not my talk page! Easily done; I've made the same mistake myself in the past.

Regarding your short Isle of Wight articles; just make sure to indicate in the article that they refer to a place on the Isle of Wight, and include {{IsleofWight-geo-stub}} at the bottom if they're stubs. That way, you provide enough context.

Happy Wiki-ing!

[edit] Cunnan

Hi Streona, and thanks for the message. Looking at that site, they are definitely using the Wiki software, which is freely available for anyone who wants it. This availability, and frustration with Wikipedia's rules on what does/doesn't belong in an encyclopedia, has led to people setting up hundreds of independent Wikis, many of them hosted on the same server (Wikia) but all of them separate from Wikipedia (some of the best known are Wookieepedia (the Star Wars wiki) and the World of Warcraft Wiki). This means the Cunnan Wiki is completely unrelated to Wikipedia; it just happens to use the same software - it was very good of you to correct the articles there, and hopefully it's appreciated, but obviously we have no oversight there.

As far as content goes, all Wikipedia articles are freely available for anyone to do anything they want with, including copy/change/try to sell/whatever. The only real restrictions are that any derivative work must be released under a similar free license to Wikipedia, and we must be credited somewhere. If the Cunnan site has used Wikipedia articles, or portions of them, they must give attribution somewhere on the site (usually a mention on each page that "this site contains material from Wikipedia..." is sufficient). If not, we can follow this up further as they would be in breach of copyright. Stuff that you've added to their site is licensed under their rules, so that wouldn't be covered. However, I think your note was more concerned with accuracy than plagarism - as I said, we have no say in how they run their Wiki, but from your message it's easy to see why they'd want to host their own stuff rather than fight through Wikipedia policies on accuracy and verification to get it on here ;)

Hope this helps, EyeSereneTALK 12:04, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

I'm not familiar with Conservapedia beyond what I've seen in various papers (the Guardian seems to love it!). You've shattered my illusions regarding Ann Widdecombe though - are you certain? Oh well... Merry Christmas to you too :) EyeSereneTALK 19:32, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dinosaur

Why have you just removed all the interwiki links? Hut 8.5 17:32, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Because my 9 year old son has got at my account. Sorry.

[edit] AfD nomination of Derek Beackon

An editor has nominated Derek Beackon, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Derek Beackon and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 17:14, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Pirates

Hello there, and welcome to Wikipedia. I don't know if "Frontal lobe damage would cause a lack of inhibition in speech and behaviour often associated with pirates." is meant as a joke, but that whole section is more appropriate for the general article on Pirates, than for International Talk Like a Pirate Day. It'd also be good if you could mention the source that you were drawing the information from, so that other editors could find out more about it. Thanks. --McGeddon (talk) 00:39, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

If you've got a source, that's great, but this whole section should definitely be moved to the pirates article (or possibly pirates in popular culture, which has a section about piratical speech). It's only about the international day in the sense of background information - it's really about pirates. --McGeddon (talk) 11:22, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Your recent edits

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button Image:Signature_icon.png located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 20:24, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] I'm sorry

Hello,

I don't know if you noticed (I hope not), but I briefly blocked your account. It should be unblocked now; please try to edit the WP:Sandbox to see if you're unblocked. If there is a stray autoblock, please follow the directions on the autoblock notice, and someone will be by soon to help.

Explanation: you posted a reply on User talk:SineBot directly under a message from a known, serial vandal. Her style of writing is very distinctive. Since you posted "inside" her thread, so to speak, your edit summary had the title of her previous heading in it. I'm watching the page, saw that heading, and stupidly jumped to the conclusion that you had created the header. I just blocked out of reflex. When I went to see what else she had edited that I needed to revert, I noticed that everything looked, well, written by a rational human. Only then did I actually check the text of your message on SineBot's talk, and realize my mistake.

Hope you'll accept my apologies, and that this doesn't cause any complications in your editing. Sorry! --barneca (talk) 15:08, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of Pondwell

A tag has been placed on Pondwell requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Mblumber (talk) 15:18, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
