Stop Wasting Abandoned Property

SWAP inc. (Stop Wasting Abandoned Property) is a non-profit community development organization that renovates houses for low-income families and individuals based out of Providence, RI. The SWAP program is an affordable alternative for those people who have difficulties buying or even renting a home. SWAP rents and sells houses and apartments, and is currently developing a commercial condominium complex. SWAP also offers a variety of volunteer opportunities and clases for new homeowners on mortgages, renting, and contracting.

SWAP was formed in 1976 by a group of community activists seeking to renovate and rebuild an abandoned house in downtown providence. After their efforts proved successful, they wondered if this concept could be applied all over the city. They sought to aid families that wanted to raise their children in a safe, comfortable area. By rebuilding abandoned houses or houses in very bad condition, they rebuilded hope and the organization has grown with the help of volunteers, board members, donators, and government funding. Today, it is run by a volunteer board of directors. [1]

Outside of rebuilding, SWAP offers programs to the community such as the Home Buyer Education Program, Good Tenant Workshop, Neighborhood Contractor Mentoring Program, and youth programs such as Community Safety and After School Tutoring.
