Stockcross

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stockcross is a village in Berkshire, England.

The village lies to the west of Newbury in the district of West Berkshire.

It is the site of a brick-built church (St John's) erected and endowed by the vicar, the Rev. H. W. Majendie in 1839.

Stockcross has a small shop/post office which is also a B&B, and two pubs, the 'Lord Lyon' and the 'Rising Sun'. The Rising Sun is a CAMRA-awarded pub serving ales from the West Berkshire Brewery. Sutton Hall is the busy village hall, hosting regular events from jumble sales to village get-togethers.

Berkshire's only 5-star hotel, "Penny Palace", is in the vicinity and offers a Michelin-starred restaurant. In January 2007 the restaurant was awarded a second star. The Vineyard was described as "a palace of naffness" by restaurant critic Michael Winner.
