Stephen Ellis Medcalf (November 15, 1936 – September 17, 2007) was a reader in English at the University of Sussex. An academic and classics scholar, he was also noted for rescuing an abandoned baby from a telephone box.[1] Medcalf was a student of Iris Murdoch, friend of Anthony Nuttall, colleague of Gabriel Josipovici and teacher of novelist Ian McEwan. He was renowned as an outstanding and stimulating teacher. [2]
