Stephen Bass was a Senior Chief Boatswain's Mate in the United States Navy SEALs Team 1, and was attached to the British Special Boat Service. He was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism in action on November 25 & 26, 2001 during the Battle of Qala-i-Jangi.

The Navy Cross is the second highest medal that can be awarded by the Department of the Navy and the second highest award given for valor.
Chief Boatswain's Mate Stephen Bass was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism while serving with the British Special Boat Service during combat operations in Northern Afghanistan on 25 and 26 November 2001.
