What does adding a photo of a hospital in St. George contribute to an article on the Mojave Desert? How does it help to illustrate it? MojaveNC 06:46, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

    • The hospital picture represents how St. George is growing and the landscaping is typical of a Mojave Desert community. However, if there are better pictures out there link them up to the article.
      • But does it really accomplish that? It's a building with desert landscaping, and would work well on an article about xeriscape or St. George. But if you want to say St. George is rapidly growing, say it in the text. If people want to see a close-up of a desert tortoise, they can look on the desert tortoise page. Pictures on the Mojave Desert page should vividly show people who don't know what the Mojave Desert looks like what they're missing – such as your pictures of the Great Basin. The pictures you've uploaded to this article are not germaine to the topic at hand. MojaveNC 07:48, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Black Rock Road, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (below the existing db tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Steve (Slf67) talk 08:30, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

I have left a note on talk:Yellowstone National Park regarding further image additions to the article. I think you should move the image to Commons so all wiki's can have access to it easier.--MONGO 17:07, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi ya! First of all - welcome to Wiki. Second - don't worry! We all make mistakes, and we all encounter problems when we first join. And some of us carry on making mistakes. It's the nature of Wiki. But, yes, you are welcome. And we hope you'll stay and enrich the world's greatest communal project. There appears to be an issue with some of the photos you are using. These are worth reading: Wikipedia:Picture tutorial, Wikipedia:Images and Wikipedia:Image use policy. It's a lot of stuff to read (and there's plenty more!), and I don't expect you read it all and understand it in one go. Carry on uploading and entering your images, but do take a look at those essays from time to time, especially when other editors remove your pictures or question you about your use of pictures. There will always be debate. Most of it is well intentioned and in good faith, but sometime people can be grumpy. Don't let grumpy users put you off. Don't get into a fight with them. Come to me and have a chat. I'm always willing to listen, help out where I can and give some advise. SilkTork 22:59, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mormon Corridor

I disagree with your statement about reverting citations that don't meet quality standards. That's part of what the Wikipedia is about - having quality, reliable sources and information, not just any source/information. You should use more discretion with your contributions – many of them do little to contribute to the overall knowledge of a topic due to low quality or dubious sourcing.

On the Mormon Corridor, I am not completely ignorant. I am actually of that faith so I understand a bit about my LDS history, though I am not perfect. If I cannot cite sources for questionable areas on the corridor or anywhere else I will correct them as I have.

Staplegunther aka Dave

[edit] Editing

David -

I'm not trying to scare you away from Wikipedia, nor to undo everything you do. My goal, and I hope yours, is to make sure Wikipedia is a repository of high-quality, accurate, unbiased and generally reliable information. I think we have different visions of how that should come about.

The problems I'm seeing with your contributions include:

  • Low quality photos - Your photography looks like it was shot from a cellphone in a moving car. That doesn't do anything to help folks visualize what the article's about. Think about quality of your photo, the context it offers and basically what the photo says. The Dixie D is a good example of this. On the surface, the photo is a White D. The photo doesn't have any context – where is the D? how big is it? what does it represent? – and it's blurry. Your photos of power substations offer context – they show a typical power substation – but they are of very, very poor quality and in the end, are counterproductive to the article.

Don't zoom in as much. Use a nicer camera and hold steady. Provide a broader scope to your photos.

  • Research - The Mormon Corridor article in particular seemed to characterize this problem. When posting articles, don't use original research. I am not convinced that San Francisco could be called part of the Mormon Corridor. After all, if you named every city founded by Mormons as part of the Mormon Corridor, there'd be hundreds of them and they wouldn't necessarily represent a corridor. Go back, do your homewrk on the topic and see if anyone else, in a book, scholarly journal or elsewhere calls Grand Junction, San Francisco or Billings as part of the Mormon Corridor. Just because it has a temple doesn't mean it's a Saint-ctuary.
  • Compromise - Please be willing to work with other editors who may have more experience in the topic. Just because you read something somewhere doesn't mean somebody else didn't read five things that contradict what you read. It's counterproductive to start an edit war on every topic you write about.

Again, I think we both want to see the Wikipedia thrive. I'm concerned that your edits are sometimes counterproductive to that goal. MojaveNC 18:20, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Quantity of photos

One other thing – Not every page needs six pictures of the same thing. For example, I think one picture of Zion National Park will do on the Utah page, don't you agree? If you have extra shots of a topic, put them in the wiki commons. Don't clog a page with pictures because you have pictures you want to share. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by MojaveNC (talkcontribs) 15:01, 14 March 2007 (UTC).

  • Mojave, I may not have the best quality photos in the world, but they do offer context for what I do have. I do not wish to get into an edit war. As I learn I grow and will offer better narratives as well as photos. But as we are all in this together, I think that we should respect one anothers contributions. Photos need not be perfect quality. With digital cameras, as I am sure you will agree, there are issues with pixel, light, and others. Demensions on the D are good for an article about the D. However on the "D" for Dixie at night you should have seen it before I put it up. It was a pixel mess. I understand that you are trying to help, but please also understand that my contributions, as well as others, are important. BTW I replaced a substation photo I have with a better one. I am not a complete photo slob. Respectfully, Dave
    • Thank you for your edits this evening. The Virgin River Gorge photo was much better than the Black Rock Road photo. I always have a very hard time shooting the gorge - the light never seems right to me, always too faded with blue from the sky. One of these days I'm going to get out there on a full moon, and that's going to be a great shot.

No problem. I think that I am getting the hang of it. I would like to see your work on the Virgin River Gorge photo. I think that will be awsome to add that the the Virgin River Gorge or another section. I hope that my contributions to Wikipedia will be somewhat better. As one other user told me it takes time. Thanks for your patience with me. Dave

[edit] Everything OK?

Hi Dave. You seem to have entered into a dialogue with MojaveNC and things are moving in the right direction. Do you need any help, or are you getting the hang of things? Please let me know if you need any advise or assistance. I'm always happy to help. Contact me here. Regards SilkTork 17:08, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi again. I've been checking in on your edits. You seem to be doing fine - adding some nice pictures. I have discovered that unless there is an unusual need to create a larger or smaller picture than normal, that it is best not to put in a size and let the Wiki software default to standard size. Also, if an article already is crowded with pictures it is best not to add any more - it can be awkward to find the right place to put new pictures and can end up making the article look distorted. Keep well! SilkTork 16:19, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Reverting

Be aware that repeatedly reverting can run you afoul of the Wikipedia:Three-revert rule. If somebody doesn't like a picture, instead of insisting on it, why not ask (on the talk page of the article) what the problem is? For instance, although I think I've taken some high-quality pictures, carefully identified as to species and location, if other people don't care for them, then I accept their judgement. So it's a bit presumptuous to take the attitude that your pictures have to be in, no matter what anybody else thinks. Stan 21:44, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:USMexicoborder.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:USMexicoborder.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 01:34, 31 May 2007 (UTC). I work for a DDS. I will have to research this out. Maybe I can get some inside information on this topic as well. I started the article to assist people with understanding the process of how SSDI and SSI processes are determined. It could probably use some attention.

[edit] Speedy deletion of Border, Utah-Nevada

A tag has been placed on Border, Utah-Nevada, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia per CSD A7.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Grand Junction Trip 92007 013.JPG. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. --ImageBot 00:46, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Yost, Utah

Hi Staplegunther, sorry we've been going back and forth regarding the copyright issue on the Yost page. Am I missing something? Tell me where I've got this wrong. Usually, bots find the copyvio stuff, but I went to the link and saw that the info on wikipedia was virtually verbatim from the onlineutah.com site. I won't revert it again, but would welcome your response to solve this issue. Thanks, happy editing, Keeper | 76 23:44, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi Keeper,
I reviewed the history and I thought that I had written enough of the information in my own words and also by using the external links provided attribution sources. I can reference if needs be. I can always use assistance in this area.
Thanks Staplegunther.
Staplegunther, I went ahead and made some minor changes to the Yost article. I made the "external links" into "references" and added in-text citations for the two sources that you have here. I also did some minor rearranging of info, hopefully without changing the meaning of anything. I'm confident there is no copyvio issue here anymore (if there ever was one in the first place - I may have been overzealous) If you have any questions about adding refs (or anything else for that matter), let me know on my talk page by clicking on the "76" in my signature. I have several editors that I am always quick with questions and I never mind answering anybody else's. Thanks for your contribs, happy editing! Keeper | 76 16:59, 11 December 2007 (UTC)Thanks for your input and I will go ahead and leave the article as is. Who knows someone who lives there will provide first hand information on the place. [edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Offenderphoto.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Offenderphoto.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. [edit] Speedy deletion of Simple Scrapbooks

A tag has been placed on Simple Scrapbooks requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

[edit] Simple Scrapbooks

In response to what you posted on my talk page, there are two problems with this article which cannot be fixed through editing. The first is that it's commercial in nature (and trying to re-write it in a "neutral" tone won't fix that). The other essential problem is that it is non-notable. It does not exert the importance of its subject (notability is established through third-party reliable sources). Please see the policies on notability for a more detailed explanation. Sorry, but contrary to your claim "Simple Scrapbooks Magazine" is not the same thing as "Time Magazine." Recreating the article over and over again won't change either of those problems as much as you may want to promote this subject (I assume from your vehemence that you have some connection to this magazine?). You can respond here, no need to go to my talk page --Loonymonkey (talk) 14:34, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

I disagree. It is difficult through Wikipedia established standards for people to write a "nuetral" article on publications. I would propose that you at least place a hold on the article until more can be contributed. The scrapbooking industy is a major economical force and there are many other publications noteable to be mentioned equally along with "Simple Scrapbooks" to be mentioned. Notablility is subjective. This magazine serves a target industry, much like "Soldier of Fortune" is to gun owners.
So in its respective industry, Simple Scrapbooks is a major publication. I have asked other wiki editors that are interested in contributing to this magazine do so. I have advised them it must be up to wiki standards.
I ask that you place a hold on speedy deletion until more "neutral" information can be added. Remember that no subject can be completely biased free, especially a commercial publication, but it can be objective without waving pom poms and screaming "BY THIS MAGAZINE". I ask that you give it at least 10 days so that other information can be added. If it does not meet wiki standards by that time, then delete it. But I think accusations of auto spam or psuedospam are a little harsh. I have edited many articles and have contributed to many articles with Wikipeida. I would not try to add an article that I did not think would be beneficial to the informational community at large. I don't even scrapbook. I just think that noteable publications of any industry have the opportunity to be published as long as they meet the wiki standards. Please put a 10 day hold before deletion. Thank you. Staplegunter aka Dave
That's not how wikipedia works. Articles either meet the standards and get edited and improved or they don't and get deleted. The article on Simple Scrapbooks falls into the second category. As I said, the essential problem isn't whether the article is neutral in tone, a problem which could be fixed through editing, it is that the subject is not notable, a problem which no amount of editing can correct. Regardless of what you think of the publication, if you cannot find any reliable third-party sources for the subject, then it is non-notable. That is not subjective, that is the standard we use. I really don't understand the appeal for 10 days (and note that I am not an administrator so I wouldn't have the ability to "put a hold" on an article anyway). If you need time to write and source the article, why not wait to create it until you have done so? Creating an article that is not up to wiki standards will just get it tagged for deletion yet again, if not by me then by someone else. --Loonymonkey (talk) 15:11, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Please stop your disruptive editing, such as the edit you made to Barack Obama. If your vandalism continues, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Please do not add racist comments to articles, as you did here. -- Scjessey (talk) 11:04, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Request for commment

For what it's worth, Staplegunther, we're taking A POLL (link)] of contributors, over on the Obama Wikipedia-biography talk page, concerning what details to add/not to add to the article. The input of your expertise is requested, if possible. — Justmeherenow (   ) 05:18, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Thx! But again, for what it's worth, clicking the the blue link in my comment directly above, leads to one poll in particular wherein eight various statements are listed and respondents are asked to choose from its spectrum the one choice that would be most appropriate in the article. Would it be possible for you be able to provide your selection and any commentary there, as well?
(P.S. The eight options I'd mentioned were
(here: Talk:Barack Obama#Bill Ayers
(and the talkpage place to record any vote from among them would be
(here: Talk:Barack Obama#!Votes (please move your votes to this section if they arent already and bolden them)) :^) — Justmeherenow (   ) 11:55, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
