Not too sure about "The bilge keel was an early 20th century predecessor although not as effective" Bilge keels have been around a long time and they operate as passive roll dampers, operating at all speeds. They are pretty effective at zero and low speeds whereas active fin stabilisers come into their own at speed. Subsea (talk) 18:29, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
