Standish Handicap

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Standish Handicap is a Group 3 Australian thoroughbred horse race held under open handicap conditions, for horses aged 2 years old and upwards, over a distance of 1200 metres. It is held annually at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne in January. The prizemoney is AUD$200,000.

The Standish Handicap is named after Captain Robert Standish, a VRC committeeman and former Chief Commissioner of police at the time of the bushranger Ned Kelly. Standish is also credited with coming up with an idea to run a race and call it the Melbourne Cup.
