Stall torque

Stall torque is the torque which is produced when an engine or motor stalls. In the case of a petrol engine or diesel engine, the stall torque is zero because, when the engine stalls, it ceases to function. For this reason, a petrol or diesel engine normally drives through a transmission system which provides torque multiplication. This system may be a clutch and gearbox, electric transmission or hydraulic transmission [1].
Steam engines and electric motors [2] continue to provide torque even when stalled so a transmission system is not usually necessary. However, electric motors must not be left in a stalled condition because this would lead to overheating and possible damage.
