Mays went to Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington.

Mays played junior college football at Mount Hood Community College. He later played college football at the University of Washington.

Mays played in the National Football League as a defensive end and defensive tackle for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Minnesota Vikings between 1980 and 1988.

Mays' son, Taylor Mays, is a defensive back for the University of Southern California, and was a stand out player at Seattle's O'Dea High School. Stafford Mays now works at Microsoft[1].
