St Peter le Poer was first mentioned in 1181 when it was situated on the west side of Old Broad Street[1]. Stow [2] refers to it as a “poor parish” although modern scholars dispute this[3]. Renovated between 1629 and 1631, it escaped destruction in the Great Fire[4] but was rebuilt further back from the street by Jesse Gibson in 1792[5]. As late as 1884 it received a new Henry Willis organ[6] but, as the the City’s resident population declined, it was deemed surplus to requirements utilising the Union of Benefices Act of 1860 [7] and it was united with St Michael, Cornhill[8]. Proceeds from the sale helped to erect a new church at Friern Barnet[9]
