St. Sophia, mother of the virgin martyrs was a martyr who gave birth to three virgin daughters, Faith, Hope, and Love. She soon became widowed. Her daughters were so perfect that soon word reached the Emperor about them. The emperor hated Christians. He decided to kill St.Sophia and her three daughters.
Faith, the oldest at twelve years of age, went first. They burned her in the fire, but no harm came to touch her. Then they ripped her breast off, reaveling milk and not blood. Again she was not harmed. Then they executed her.
Hope, age ten, went second. They burned her on a stake, but no harm came to her. Then they put her into a furnace, but again, nothing came to hurt her. She, too, was executed.
Last was Love, age of nine. She was put on a wheel that stretched her out, popping her legs off their sockets, but to Love, she felt nothing. She too, was but on a stake to burn, but she laughed in it like a big gush of air. She was executed.
St. Sophia carried her daughter's bodies out to a graveyard and buried them herself. That night, she died in her sleep lying on their grave.
St. Sophis's feast day is September 16. Sophia, who name means "Wisdom" is the legendary mother of the virgin martyrs Faith, Hope, and Charity.
