[edit] History

St. Mary's School was founded in 1864 by members of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), a Roman Catholic religious order founded by Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, and that has been active in the field of education ever since its inception. The school is still run by Jesuits.

St. Mary's School began as a Catholic military orphanage, but soon found itself providing Catholic boys of the Anglo-Indian community with a general and religious education through the medium of English. While Catholics still receive priority in admission, boys of other communities have always been admitted as well.

Today, the school has four buildings, two playgrounds and a basketball court.

Famous ex-students include Freddie Mercury (then Farrokh Bulsara), Bollywood actor Boman Irani, orchestra conductor Zubin Mehta, industrialist Azim Premji, and Bollywood film-maker Sooraj R. Barjatya.

[edit] Mission

In general, the Jesuit school aims at the integral personal formation of the students. To this end, special efforts are made to:

  • help the students become mature, spiritually oriented men of character.
  • encourage them continually to strive after excellence in every field.
  • be clear and firm on principles, courageous and resolute in action.
  • be unselfish in the service of their fellow men and become agents of progressive social change.
  • instill in then a true national spirit, a deep love for the motherland, an appreciation of Indian culture, values, language, and things Indian, and a keen civic and social sense.

[edit] Motto

The school motto is Latin Immaculata, literally "immaculate" in the sense of Mary's conception untainted by original sin, or in the sense of the "perfection" that St. Mary's School wishes to see its students strive for.

[edit] Anthem

1.
From oe'r the waves and far away
from hills and plains with voices gay
They sing the school they love so well
within whose walls they long to dwell
And live the days of yore again
They long alas, but long in vain.
  3.
Our lives are bright and free of care
The burden's light that we must bear.
Through tasks that should our ire provoke
Through sun and rain and mist and smoke.
St. Mary's boys will smile and sing
'till with their songs echoes ring.
(Repeat Chorus)
2.
Chorus:
Come boys lets sing the school we love
Our chorus rends the skies above
And let the mountains and the hills
Proclaim the love that young heart thrills
St. Mary's boys, St. Mary's boys,
Hurrah we are, St. Mary's boys.
  4.
St. Mary's boys cling to their God
Through life's long day for Him they plod.
To God and country ever true,
In peace and war their valour show,
Where'er the cause of duty lies,
They prove themselves St. Mary's boys.
(Repeat Chorus)
