St. Mary's Catholic High School (Blackpool)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

St. Mary's Catholic High School is a school in Layton, Blackpool, Lancashire. The school is a specialist Arts College.

With over 1800 pupils, it is the largest Roman Catholic secondary school in Lancashire. The school is on the site of the former Convent of the Holy Child Jesus (usually known as 'Layton Hill'), on St. Walburgas Road near to Blackpool Victoria Hospital. Layton Hill was the principal Catholic girls' Grammar School in the Fylde from 1929 until 1977. In that year, it merged with the boys' Grammar School, St Joseph's College, to form St Mary's High School. From 1923 to their departure in 1975, St Joseph's had been run by the Irish Christian Brothers. Sister Maureen Grimley (1932-2007) was the first Head teacher of the combined school. Initially the school operated on two campuses, but the St Joseph's campus was shut down in the early 1980s and given over to housing. Further expansion occurred in 1982 when the school was merged with the Catholic former secondary modern schools St Thomas of Canterbury and St Catherine.

The current headmaster is Mr S Tierney.
