Srivatsa Ramaswami

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Srivtasa Ramaswami (1939-) is an Indian yogi from Chennai.

Ramaswami was a student of the father of modern yoga, Krishnamacharya, and studied under him for 33 years, from 1955 until 1988 shortly before Krishnamacharya's passing. He is Krishnamacharya's longest-standing student with one exception, Krishnamacharya's son T. K. V. Desikachar.

Ramaswami has published several books, including The Complete Book of Vinyasa Yoga (2005)[1] which attempts to convey the full extent of Krishnamacharya's asana teachings. Ramaswami explains in the introduction to his book that many of the famous modern schools of yoga teach only a subset of Krishnamacharya's body of knowledge. The book presents what he calls Vinyasa Krama (Sanskrit for tool) yoga.

He continues by saying that to teach a fixed style of yoga, or emphasise only fixed asana sequences, diverges enormously from Krishnamacharya's style of adapting what he taught to each student. In this analysis, Krishnamacharya was a different teacher for every student, adapting to become the teacher that the student needed.
