[edit] History

With the formation of the Ceylon Army, the provision of supply and transport which had been earlier handled by the Ceylon Supply & Transport Corps was to be handled by a company of the Ceylon Army Service Corps (CASC), that formed on 30th October 1949 with Capt. W.W. Perera as company commander. This consisted of a company headquarters, composite platoon, transport and workshop platoon and an officer in-charge barrack services. During the early stages, implementation of the establishment was slow, though steady progress and the small, but efficient, nucleus of the CASC, both civilian and military was called upon to labor unceasingly and untiringly to keep the ‘wheels moving and the stomachs lined’. In 1959 the company was elevated to the level of a unit and 1 Ceylon Army Service Corps was formed. Lt. Col W.W. Perera was appointed first Commanding Officer. In 1949 the Volunteer unit was raised under the command of Lt. Col Gordon Austin.
