Four-dimensional chess is a four-dimensional version of three-dimensional chess. It was invented by Ferdinand Maack, inventor of Raumschach, a popular version of 3-D chess. The game is played on a special board of 25 5x5 boards, arranged in such a way to provide five sets of Raumschach boards (each five 5x5 boards). The usual pieces (king, queen, bishop, knight, rook, and pawn) are used, as well as the unicorn from 3-D chess and a new fairy piece, the balloon, which is unique to four-dimensional chess.
