Talk:Spritsail

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I have seen (in the Bowsprit article for one, and also here: http://www.greatgridlock.net/Sqrigg/galleon.html) the word "spritsail" used to refer to a square sail hanging from the bowsprit. Is this usage incorrect? If not, maybe it should be mentioned in this article, especially since the Bowsprit one links to it when talking about the square sails. tyler skarz 04:10, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes, that is correct, and those kinds of spritsails were omnipresent on sailing vessels from the first large galleons until the turn of the 19th century. Certainly more prominent in nautical history than spritsail covered here, which is just a small boat rig. The bowsprit-mounted sail needs it's own article with disambiguation, especially as other articles link to this one when spritsails are mentioned, incorrectly. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.31.156.165 (talk) 19:21, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
