Springville-Griffith Institute Central School District

Springville-Griffith Institute Central School District is a Central School District in rural New York State. Located 35 minutes south of Buffalo, the district consists of the communities of Collins, Colden, Glenwood, East Concord, and Springville.

Springville's school honors the name of Archibald Griffith who raised a seminary from a position of uncertainty to one of proud equality with any in the land. In 1867 the name of the Academy was changed to Griffith Institute, in consideration of his liberal donation. Later he gave $10,000 to the Institute.SGI History Article
[edit] School Governance
The School is governed by Federal and State laws, regulations and policies. The remaining actions are set through policies of the Board of Education (BOE). For the purposes of the school, policies have the force of law. Policies are voted on by its seven members. Every action must carry with four votes, even if not all seven members are present. Currently the Board consists of members with terms expiring in June of: Patrick Hurley - President 2008, Linda Hoffman - Vice President 2009, Patricia Tobin 2009, Peter M. Sobota 2010, Michael E. Connors 2010, Robert Ketchum 2011, Jeremiah W. Kane 2012.
The BOE hires and fires a superintendent that manages the school for the BOE, currently Dr. Brenda Peters.
In 2007 the voters approved the school budget, but instead, "to the surprise of the many", defeated incumbent Karen Tashijan in favor of a former BOE member.[1]
