I've not read anywhere that says that Spokes is so called because he fashioned his first whistles from bicycle spokes and it's hard to see how this would be possible. I've heard that Spokes is a Tsotsitaal nickname for someone that uses a sharpened spoke as a lethal weapon, like the character Butcher did in the film Tsotsi.
