Sports in the San Francisco Bay Area

The San Francisco Bay Area currently hosts nine major league sports franchises. The city and county of San Francisco is home to MLB's San Francisco Giants, MLL's San Francisco Dragons, and the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL. The city of San Jose is home to the San Jose Sharks of the NHL, the San Jose Stealth of the NLL, and the San Jose SaberCats of the AFL. A reincarnation of the MLS San Jose Earthquakes will resume play in 2008 in Santa Clara. The city of Oakland is home to the Golden State Warriors of the NBA, MLB's Oakland Athletics and the Oakland Raiders of the NFL.

The Bay Area is also well-represented in college sports. Three universities whose football programs compete in the highest tier of NCAA competition, Division I FBS, are located in the area:
