This is a list of characters in the Spirit Detective Saga of the anime and manga series YuYu Hakusho

- Masaru (マサル) Voiced by: Ikue Ōtani - Yusuke saves Masaru, a little boy, from the automobile and sacrifices his life. Botan later tells Yusuke that if he had not attempted to save Masaru, the boy would have been run over yet escape without a scratch.
- Mr. Akashi (明石) and Mr. Iwamoto (岩本) - Yusuke does not get along too well with his teachers at school. Mr. Akashi and Mr. Iwamoto hate him and his friends. They try every trick in the book to expel them. During the Four Beasts saga, Mr. Iwamoto is infested with a roundworm monster/makai insect. Since Suzaku commanded all of the infested people to kill Keiko Yukimura, Iwamoto stalks Keiko Yukimura around Sarayashiki Junior High School before Yusuke destroys the whistle, which causes the insect inside him to die; he returns to normal afterwards. Yusuke Urameshi once tested his new spiritual powers by firing his reigun into the back of Iwamoto's head, knocking him out. Akashi tends to attack Kuwabara's group more. Mr. Iwamoto reappears in the Chapter Black and Three Kings Saga in the opener.
- Eikichi (永吉) - Eikichi is Kazuma Kuwabara's cat. She is known as "Chi-chi" in the Filipino dub. Eikichi is used by Sakamoto's gang as a ransom for the demand for Kuwabara to steal. (Appeared in Episode 5 and Episode 97)
- Keiko's friends - Two girls who follow around Keiko in the early chapters of the manga and the other episodes of the anime. One girl, the black-haired girl with glasses, is named Natsuko (夏子). The other girl, a blonde, is not named.
- Sayaka (さやか) - Her character differs between the anime and the manga.
- A dead girl who wishes to play with someone. Spending most of her short life sick and in a convalescent centre, when she arrives home 6 months before her death, her parents don't know how to cope and worked late. After she dies, she finds Shota to play with, but to do this she's forcing Shota's soul from his body, which is slowly killing him. Eventually she tries to drag Shota into the afterlife, yet Yusuke stops her. She hangs around Yusuke for a few more chapters before leaving.
- In the anime, Sayaka is an agent of the Spirit World.
- She is known as "Tina" in the Filipino dub.
- Goki (English manga) or Gouki (English anime) (剛鬼 Gōki) Voiced by: Norio Wakamoto - A member of Hiei's underworld gang who is a soul-eating ogre. Yusuke kills him with a powered-up Reigun blast to the mouth. He is known as "Jerry" in the Filipino dub.
- Jaki (邪鬼) (English manga) / Jyaki (English anime) Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu - The demon that possesses Sakamoto.
[edit] Genkai Tournament Arc
- Rando (乱童 Randō) Voiced by: Yō Inoue - A demon who killed 99 martial arts masters and stole their techniques. He sought to make it a tidy 100 by defeating Genkai, and entered the tournament she devised to determine her successor. Although he disguised himself as an innocent young monk (the alias is known as Shaolin (少林, Japanese: Shōrin, Chinese Hanyu Pinyin: Shǎolín ) in the English manga and Shorin in the English anime), his true nature was revealed during his fight with Kazuma Kuwabara. When it appeared Kuwabara was winning, Rando used a shrinking curse on Kuwabara, making him the size of a caterpillar, and crushed his bones in one fist. Although an exhausted Yusuke Urameshi had a difficult time with him, when Yusuke started to take the upper hand, Rando tried to use the same curse against Yusuke. However the curse backfired on him, this is because the chant Rando uses for the curse will backfire and affect the user if there was no target. Since Yusuke's ears were clogged with algae that prevented him from hearing it, and the curse enters the victim through the auditory nerve, it didn't affect Yusuke. This allowed Yusuke to smash the tiny Rando which knocked Rando out and Botan was left in charge of taking the tiny Rando to Spirit World. He is known as "Benjo" in the Filipino dub.
- Kazemaru (乱童) Voiced by: Mitsuaki Madono - A powerful ninja bodyguard who is a master of special energy tracking shurikens and the Spirit Palm technique. He is friends with Kibano and likes to scare his opponents. Kazemaru defeats Kuroda in the first round but loses to his own shurikens against Yusuke in the second round.
- Kibano (乱童) Voiced by: Hidetoshi Nakamura - A powerful martial arts master who lives to test his own limits. He is friends with Kazemaru and has a scientific mind as he created a helmet to help him detect Spirit Energy when his regular senses aren't much help. His main attacks are the Big Arm Bomber and the Bonzai Missile. After almost winning, Yusuke is able to attach a cigarette thrown in the dark by Genkai and is able to defeat him with a Spirit Gun in the first round.
- Musashi (乱童) Voiced by: Tarou Arakawa - A powerful samurai who tracks and destroys evil spirits such as demons. He has high Spirit Awareness and is very swift. His main attack comes from his wooden bokken: the Shinbatto Shining Sword. He almost kills Kuwabara in the first round of the tournament before Kuwabara awakens the Spirit Sword which defeats him. Musashi carries a patch over his eye, implying he has been in many battles.
- Kuroda (乱童) Voiced by: Ken Shiroyama - A powerful cold-blooded contract killer, assassin, and mercenary, Kuroda is a master of knives and is loves to kill. He almost defeats Kazemaru in the first round before the ninja's Spirit Palm technique blows him into smithereens.
- Chinpoh (乱童) - A Chinese wanderer who is very polite and loves a good fight, Chinpoh was unlucky enough to have to face Shorin/Rando in the first round. Although Chinpoh landed a few good hits, the evil demon easily disposed of him within a few second. Chinpoh has the stereotypical French/Italian cook mustache.
- Baldock (乱童) - The king of bats, he is a low class demon who lives in the Dark Forest of Genkai. He faces Yusuke, but after half-an-hour, Yusuke memorizes his attack pattern and beats the hell out of Baldock.
[edit] Saint Beasts Arc
- Genbu (玄武) Voiced by: Yū Shimaka - The first Saint Beast, who has the form of a golem-like creature made of rock. He can move through rock and separate his body into many pieces, but this attack is the cause of his defeat when Kurama grabs his core while his body is separated and destroys it, thus killing Genbu.
- Byakko (白虎) Voiced by: Takeshi Watabe - The second Saint Beast, a large tiger demon who can absorb reiki into his body to make himself stronger. He battles with Kuwabara twice -- first on the battlements of the Saint Beasts' castle, where Kuwabara defeats him by overstuffing his body with his own reiki, and again in his own lair, falling into the lava and apparently dying. He reappears once more, begging the third Saint Beast Seiryu for help; however, he is frozen by his fellow Saint Beast and shattered into shards of ice, an ignominious end to his life.
- Seiryu (青龍 Seiryū) Voiced by: Mitsuo Senda - The third member of the Saint Beasts. A dragon demon, he is extremely fast and capable of emitting youki to turn the opponent into ice. In the manga he is promptly chopped into pieces by Hiei before he can attack him, making him the swiftest-defeated Saint Beast (though due to Hiei's skill, not due to being weak). In the anime, however, he proves to be a dangerous foe, nearly defeating Hiei before being killed himself.
- Suzaku (朱雀) Voiced by: Nobuo Tobita - The final member of the Saint Beasts, a phoenix-like demon whose hair acts as antennae. His powers are lightning-based; however, he also uses a flute to control the Makai Bug-infected humans on the Human World to do as commanded. After his fellow Saint Beasts were killed, Suzaku sent the infested humans to kill Keiko Yukimura. Yusuke had a difficult time against Suzaku and his lightning and ability to split himself into seven people, although he unknowingly damaged Suzaku's antennae causing Suzaku's lightning attacks to miss slightly. However when Keiko was about to be killed and with no Reiki, Yusuke nearly sacrificed himself to use his life energy to use his Shotgun technique to kill all seven Suzakus. In the Filipino dub he is known as "Lazarus". Suzaku's haircut is very similar to the haircut of Jareth the Goblin King, the villain of the movie Labyrinth.
- Murg (English manga) / Murugu (English anime) (ムルグ) Voiced by: Chisa Yokoyama - Suzaku's assistant; a bird.
[edit] Rescue Yukina Arc
- Gonzo Tarukane (English manga) / Gonzou Tarukane (English anime) (垂金権造 Tarukane Gonzō) Voiced by: Kenichi Ogata - Rich man who kidnaps Yukina. In the Filipino dub he is known as "Don Paquito Guinto".
- Miyuki (魅由鬼) Voiced by: Ako Mayama - One of Tarukane's lackies and one of three powerful demon warriors known as "the Triad". She appears to be a beautiful woman with a horn on her forehead. She dresses like a Chinese woman with her red dress which has a hip length slit along the side that effectively exposes her left buttocks. In the Japanese version and the English-language manga Miyuki is a male crossdresser while in the English edited anime, she is female. She was the weakest member of the triad but took the longest to defeat because of Yusuke "checking" to see whether she was male or female.
- Inmaki (隠魔鬼) Voiced by: Akio Nojima - Another member of the Triad working for Tarukane. In addition to wielding razor-sharp claws, Inmaki possesses a magic cloak that can turn him invisible by flipping it over himself. Although the most powerful of the triad, he is quickly dispatched by a combo of Kuwabara's senses and Yusuke's Spirit Shotgun.
- Gokumonki (獄門鬼) Voiced by: Yū Shimaka - The third and final member of the Triad working for Tarukane. In the manga he is defeated by Kuwabara and Yusuke so quickly that he's never even given a chance to introduce himself. However, in the anime he was able to fight them by taking Botan hostage and using her as a shield to keep them from attacking. He was struck by both Yusuke and Kuwabara at the same time when she managed to slip out of his clutches though.
- Hirue (蛭江) Voiced by: Issei Futamata - The first yokai Yusuke and Kuwabara encounter on Tarukane's estate. His true form resembles an octopus. He is one of Toguro's subordinates and is easily defeated by Yusuke and Kuwabara.
- Sakyo N. (左京 Sakyō; his family name is not given, but it can be assumed to begin with "N" due to the initials on his lighter.) Voiced by: Nobuyuki Furuta - Another wealthy man who sets up Tarukane. He is the founder and leader of the Black Black Club, a hedonistic group that sells lower-class youkai into slavery. In addition, he is the financial backer of the Toguro Team, the main rivals of Yusuke-tachi in the Dark Tournament. A party he held for his financial backers, wherein they killed weak demons and bathed in their blood, was what initially made Shinobu Sensui, the previous Spirit Detective, go mad. In the Filipino dub he is known as "Mr. Valdez".
[edit] Manga-only Characters (Spirit Detective Saga)
While Yusuke is undergoing his revival test, several one-chapter stories occur, featuring characters never seen again in the series. As most of these stories were cut from the anime, the characters were also.
- Shota (正太 Shōta) - Yusuke and Botan find this boy who is upset over the fact that his dog, Jiro (ジロ), is dying. The fact that some of his classmates are bullying him about losing his only friend doesn't help matters. Jiro, in turn, is so loyal that even after he dies, he hangs around the house, refusing to go to the afterlife. Yusuke tricks Shota into accepting the fact that his dog is dead and that both have to move on. Later Sayaka tries to pull Shota into her realm so she can play with him in the afterlife. Shota has no sixth sense, so this is slowly killing him. Yusuke stops the plan.
- Kenji (ケンジ) - Kenji is a boy who dated Kana (加奈), a girl who always waited for him without complaint, even several hours after he was late. One day over the previous Christmas, she was not there since she fell into a coma and died, and Kenji lost a 10,000 yen bet because of this. When Yusuke investigates her case, it is revealed that Kenji has multiple girlfriends and messes around with them all. Yusuke helps the girl move on before scaring the living daylights out of Kenji for what he did to Kana. When Yusuke calls in an accusing tone, Kenji out loud states, "Is that you, Junko?! Hiromi?! I know, you're Kazumi! Or... Akiko!?" revealing that he never really knew his girlfriends. Yusuke shows up "in person" to frighten Kenji after the telephone conversation.
- Shinji (信二) - Shinji, his grandfather, and the tanuki - Shinji is the grandson of an elderly man who rescued a baby tanuki out of a trap years before. Shinji, along with his parents, died in a car accident 6 months before the series and the tanuki, now fully grown, pretends to be Shinji in order to comfort the elderly man in his final days of life.
- Daisuke "Big Dai" Motomoto (元本大助 Motomoto Daisuke) - Dai is a gang member from Kasanegafuchi Junior High School who kidnaps Keiko after she interferes in his beating up a weaker person. After the kidnapping Dai plans to rape her in the Cafe Half-Dead, a club frequented by his school's gang members. Yusuke rescues Keiko and beats up Dai and his goons. As Yusuke is technically still supposed to be dead, he asks Kuwabara to take the credit, but Keiko overheard regardless. Dai is 165cm (5 feet, 5 inches) tall, 40cm (15 inches) of which is his face. Dai hates waiting and likes lecturing other people. Dai's type of girl is Youki Kudoh.

- Eri Kiuchi (木内えり Kiuchi Eri) & Katsumi Sato (佐藤勝美 Satō Katsumi) - Both girls, also best friends, are testing for a scholarship to get into N__ High School, apparently the best private school in the country. However, N__ High School will take only one of the girls. Sayaka senses that someone is trying to kill Eri, so Yusuke intervenes. Later it is revealed that Katsumi, being pressured by her parents and teachers, wanted to get in so badly that some evil spirits tried to use her "wish" to hijack Eri's body (via a curse Katsumi used) and cause her to kill herself. Yusuke saves her, and the two girls decide to go to S__ High School, an all girls' school, together instead of separating, despite their teachers' exhortations (one of the girls getting into the N__ High School would have in turn boosted their junior high school's reputation).
- Takai (高井) - Takai only appears in the manga. Mr. Iwamoto steals Takai's precious pen and then attempts to frame Yusuke for the crime.
- Suekichi Matsuo (松尾末吉 Matsuo Suekichi), a.k.a. "Matsu the Dud" - A student at Iwamano Junior High School, and an acquaintance of Yusuke's when they were younger, is a young boxer and bully magnet and hence is given the nickname "Matsu the Dud". Yusuke takes over his body and helps him become a better boxer.
- Tachikawa (立川) - Tachikawa is one of Suekichi's tormentors. Suekichi is given the courage to punch Tachikawa in the face.
- Samejima (鮫島) - Samejima is a student at Rinju Junior High School who is even meaner than Tachikawa. Samejima is Suekichi's upcoming boxing opponent and hopes to defeat him. Suekichi manages to defeat Samejima with a bit of prodding from Yusuke pre-match.
- Shiori (志緒里) - Shiori is Shota's classmate from school. Shiori is not to be confused with Shiori Minamino.

- Sayaka (anime)- A Spirit World investigator who checks on Yusuke. She is known as "Tina" in the Filipino dub. Her role is expanded on in the manga (see Manga-only section).
