Spire FM was awarded the licence to broadcast to the City of Salisbury and surrounding areas by the former Radio Authority, now OFCOM, in 1991. The capital needed to launch the station was raised entirely from local investors.

The station takes its name from the spire of Salisbury Cathedral.

Born on 5 September 1992, Spire FM broadcasts from City Hall Studios in Malthouse Lane, Salisbury, part of the City Hall entertainments venue.

The station has received many industry awards and has just won the Radio Academy Nations and Regions award for 'Station of the Year' 2007.

In the past, Spire FM has also won a prestigious Sony Radio Award for Station of the Year in 1994 and the runner-up award in 2003. Other recent awards include: the KPMG Marketing Excellence Award, and Wiltshire Business of the Year finalist.

In October 2007, the station regained its status as the radio station with the highest reach in England at 44%. Spire FM reversed the national trend by increasing its lead to 10% over BBC Radio 1 and 2. (Source: Rajar/Ipsos Q3 2007).[citation needed]
