Spear Lancaster was the Libertarian candidate for governor of Maryland in 2002. His running mate was Lorenzo GaztaƱaga. He received 11,546 votes (.68%).
At the time, the state of Maryland was requiring third party candidates to submit 27,117 signatures to appear on the ballot. Lancaster provided 37,176 signatures; 27,329 of which were considered valid by the state.
Lancaster was the first third party gubernatorial candidate to appear on the Maryland ballot in 35 years.
Spear Lancaster remained active in the Libertarian Party after the 2002 Maryland gubernatorial election. In 2008, he endorsed Ron Paul for President.
