False edges on blades are often found on knives or swords designed for fighting. One long side of the blade is commonly sharpened for cutting or slashing, of course, but some blades also feature a shorter sharpened edge on the back, or opposite, side of the blade, near the tip. In practice, while the long sharpened edge of the blade is used primarily to cut or slash an opponent, a false edge also permits the blade to cut when reversing the blade's direction, thereby imparting what is often called a back cut. Back cuts, of course, are possible only when there's a sharpened false edge on the back of the blade, near the tip, for that purpose. Hope that sheds some light on this term.
