I have been studying my local newspaper archive in Cambridge, England, and there is an advertisement for the spacehopper from November 1969 - describing it as a "trend" - http://space-hopper.blogspot.com/2006/08/1969-space-hopper-in-britain.html

I am aware that this contradicts the BBC and Toy Retailers association websites, but UK pop culture research over the last few years has aroused much controversy and some questions over accuracy. In the 1990s, it is interesting to note that the Toy Retailers (then BATR) were touting (quite correctly) "Klackers" as THE craze of 1971.
