[edit] Map is factually wrong
This map (an orphan, by the way) is factually wrong, since it includes the Portuguese Empire in Spanish Empire and that was never the case. Portugal and Spain had a period (1580-1640) of personal union of the crowns (called Iberian Union), but they remained independ countries (even if the kings were the same) and their respective empires were independent. If A Spanish centered POV claims the Portuguese Empire as being part of the Spanish one, what prevents a Portuguese centered POV of doing the reverse, that is, claiming the Spanish Empire was part of the Portuguese one? This map, along with others that defend the same historicall error, must be deleted. Thank you. The Ogre 15:11, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
- I removed your speedy deletion tag because being wrong is not one of the criteria listed in Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion. Use WP:Articles for deletion instead. However, I question your contention that the image is wrong because it does show the two empires in different colors. The straight line crossing Brazil for the Tordesillas line was correct before the western portion of Brazil was settled. Even the color description seems to agree with your contention, especially "Lavender: Portuguese possessions ruled jointly under the Spanish sovereign, 1580-1640". — Joe Kress 19:07, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
- I apparently misunderstood your objection. Apparently you don't object to either the image or to its description but to its title, Spanish EmpireMap, on the grounds that the image includes the Portuguese Empire. Unfortunately, the title of an image cannot be modified, which leaves deletion of the image as the only alternative. I know of another image still being used on Wikipedia whose only fault is that its title is misspelled. (Speedy deletion is still not appropriate.) — Joe Kress 21:32, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
