I'm not sure, and I work here! :-) I'll look into it, but I suspect it should be something like "It is the only major research institute in the U.S. without direct university support or association". zowie 16:46, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

I am not sure who added this statement, but we are a not-for-profit research and development organization. We are independent and not tied to a university; however, I believe there are a few other R&D organizations in the U.S. who are also not directly associated with an university. [User: SwRIWebManager]
