[edit] Eastern terminus
SC 5's eastern terminus is at a rare country interchange at US 521. This is one mile south of Andrew Jackson State Park and approximately nine miles north of Lancaster.
[edit] The drive
SC 5 begins as a rural road and runs at 55 MPH for most of the run before entering Rock Hill. SC 5 intersects Old Hickory RD nearly one and a quarter miles into its existence. Old Hickory is the main road to Van Wyck. A mile and a half further up the road, SC 5 serves as the western terminus for S.C. Highway 75. After crossing the CSX line, SC 5 rides for nearly seven miles before entering Rock Hill, South Carolina. There, it merges with US 21 northbound and becomes known as South Anderson Road.
US 21 and SC 5 overlap for about four miles before US 21 merges off right after crossing I-77. However, immediately SC 5 becomes concurrent with S.C. Highway 72. They quickly head off again, and SC 5 heads straight towards downtown Rock Hill, where it splits off and becomes two one-way roads for about a mile, and also where it crosses US 21 Business and S.C. Highway 122.
One mile out of downtown Rock Hill, SC 5 crosses over S.C. Highway 322. From there, after a couple of suburban miles, SC 5 enters downtown York. One mile before entering, SC 5 spilts off a business route (described in detail later).
Also, at that intersection, SC 5 becomes concurrent with S.C. Highway 161, where the combined highway crosses over S.C. Highway 49 nearly a mile and a half later.
After rimriding the north side of York, SC 161 and SC 5 split their different ways. After leaving York, SC 5 is known as Black Highway. Eight miles after leaving York, SC 5 serves as the western terminus for S.C. Highway 55. Also, after running into SC 55, SC 5 serves as the northern terminus for S.C. Highway 97.
Another seven-mile or so stretch, SC 5 enters Blacksburg, where another merge is in order with US 29. At this merger with US 29, SC 5 serves as the southern terminus for S.C. Highway 198, SC 5 merges off and goes over I-85.
[edit] Western terminus
Just a mile north of I-85, SC 5 runs into S.C. Highway 18. Threre SC 5 ends. This is about a mile below the SC-NC State Line.
[edit] SC 5 Business
South Carolina Highway 5 Business begins on SC 5 just a mile and a half away from downtown York. It lasts for about two miles. Nearly a half-mile into SC 5 Business serves as the northern terminus of S.C. Highway 324.
That is shortly followed by U.S. Route 321 Business and U.S. Route 321. After going another three-quarters of a mile, SC 5 BUS ends at SC 5 north of York.
