Sound Shore Medical Center (SSMC) is a not-for-profit health care organization located in located in New Rochelle, New York.
When first established in 1892, New Rochelle Hospital had only eight beds and four nurses. Over the past century it has grown to become the largest private teaching hospital in Westchester County, with residencies in Medicine, Surgery, Anesthesiology, and Pediatrics. Sound Shore also has Fellowship programs in Laparoscopic Surgery, Endocrinology, and Gastroenterology.[1]
Sound Shore Medical Center has 550 affiliated physicians, 637 allied health professionals and nurses, and a support staff of 783. The physical facility offers 50 rehabilitation, 326 acute and 100 extended care beds.[1]
It provides primary, acute, emergency and long-term health care to the residents of southern Westchester and southwestern Connecticut. From premature newborns in its New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) designated Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit to fragile seniors in the Schaffer Extended Care Center, the Medical Center serves the needs of all members of the community. It treats over 85,000 patients annually. Designated as a New York State Area Trauma Center, the only in Southern Westchester. The Emergency Services Department is one of the largest and busiest in Westchester County providing immediate, often life-saving, care to over 36,000 individuals each year.
Among Sound Shore’s centers of excellence are leading programs in cancer care, bariatric weight loss, renal dialysis, cardiac catheterization, laparoscopic surgery, orthopaedics, gerontology and sleep medicine. As a major provider of inpatient cardiology services in lower Westchester, Sound Shore addresses a full array of cardiovascular conditions and concerns including prevention, diagnostic services, and tertiary care services. The Harriet and Bernard Miller Adult Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory is directly linked to Westchester Medical Center’s full service cardiac surgery program. SSMC’s newly renovated state-of-the-art Ambulatory Center is the hub for vital outpatient services that include the Endoscopy Suite, Bariatric Surgical Weight Loss Program, Sleep Studies Diagnostic Center, Diabetes Education Center, and the Orthopaedic and Neurological Spine Center.
