Sorona

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sorona is a unique polymer created by DuPont based on 1,3-propanediol (PDO).[1]. It is claimed to be both soft and extremely stain resistant plus high strength and stiffness [2]

Sorona (aka 3GT) is a co-polymer of "Bio-PDO" and petroleum derivered terephthalate. The polymers in this series include poly(ethylene terephthalate) (2GT), poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (3GT), and poly(tetramethylene terephthalate) (4GT). [3]

The polymer Sorona has been mentioned by J. Craig Venter in interviews[4] as an example of an application of Synthetic Biology. He says "DuPont argues that Sorona is going to be the first billion-dollar biotech product other than a pharmaceutical."

DuPont's CEO (Charles O. Holliday) wears a pinstripe suit made of Sorona fibers [5]
