Talk:Sonoma Sol

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The person who wants this page deleted needs to better explain why. The Sonoma County Sol is one of the founding teams of the National Premier Soccer League, along with the Detroit Arsenal, the Chico Rooks and the Sacramento Knights, among others.

Has this person also requested that the National Premier Soccer League article, the Detroit Arsenal article, the Chico Rooks article and the Sacramento Knights article all be deleted? If so, why not?

If the Rooks, the Knights and the Arsenal articles are all legitimate, then so is the Sol article.

If the NPSL article and its teams' articles are deleted, then so should the Premier Development League article and the United Soccer Leagues article, and every other soccer related article in the United States which does not constitute Major League Soccer.

Perhaps this person is an executive with the rival United Soccer Leagues and simply wants to attack its competitor, the National Premier Soccer League?

The Sol is a minor league soccer team. If its article is deleted, then the article of every minor league baseball team should also be deleted. Unless Wikipedia wants to discriminate against soccer and in favor of baseball.SolMan 17:29, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Sonoma Sol, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be a biographical account about a person, group of people, or band, but it does not indicate how or why he/she/they is/are notable. If you can indicate why Sonoma Sol is really notable, I advise you to edit the article promptly, and also put a note on Talk:Sonoma Sol. Any admin should check for such edits before deleting the article. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Please read our criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 7 under Articles. You might also want to read our general biography criteria. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. To contest the tagging and request that admins should wait a while for you to assert his/her/their notability, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and then immediately add such an assertion. It is also a very good idea to add citations from reliable sources to ensure that your article will be verifiable. Wizardry Dragon 17:06, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

This should definitely be taken to the articles for debate page. I welcome the opportunity to debate this with whoever placed the deletion tag and have them explain why they want this article deleted but they do not single out similar articles pointed out by me above.

Note: I have already edited the article to add citations to the above-related articles (National Premier Soccer League and other teams in that League).SolMan 17:29, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

The validity of other articles for deletion does not reflect on the validity of your own contribution for deletion. Really, we appreciat the contribution (well I do at least), but the problem lies more in the fact that the article in and of itself does not assert the notability of the subject. If you edit the page to reflect their important, and cite it properly following the Wikipedia style guidelines, than it is a lot less likely to be deleted. By the way, please sign your comments on the talk page with four tilda ~~~~ Wizardry Dragon 17:18, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

For the record, I am not the one that put this page up for deletion - please check the page history to see who did, I am merely attempting to outline to you what you have to do if you wish to avert the deletion of this article. Wizardry Dragon 17:24, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

If the validity of other articles doesn't matter, then what is to prevent me from going around and requesting that those articles be deleted? I guess I will have to go to every PDL soccer team article and every minor league baseball team article and request that they be deleted also. That is only fair. SolMan 17:27, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

If you're interesting in exactly what is and isn't considered notable enough for Wikipedia, please read the Wikipedia Notability guidelines Wizardry Dragon 17:30, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Actually, the company notability article might be more appropriate:

Wikipedia Company Notability Guidelines If, as is stated there, a pedestrian "list of WalMarts in Germany" meets the notability guidelines, then certainly an article about a unique minor league soccer team, organized by a non-profit corporation, meets the notability guidelines. SolMan 17:41, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

You're comparing apples and oranges. Walmart is a Fortune 500 leading corporation, which is simply leagues more more notable than ANY soccer league. Wizardry Dragon 17:44, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

No, you misread the notability guidelines. It didn't say anything about an article on Walmart. It said an article listing the Walmarts in Germany, by itself without anything more, meets the notability guidelines. If that kind of drivel-- a list of Walmarts in Germany without anything more! -- meets notability guidelines, how is it this article does not?

I think the individual who requested deletion needs to explain himself. I checked and he goes around requesting deletions like a highway cop trying to meet his traffic ticket quota. He stated "small fish in a small pond." What does this mean? One could argue that Japanese pro baseball teams are "small fish in a small pond" compared to Major League Baseball in the U.S., so explain your criteria for your ambiguous "small fish in a small pond" theory. SolMan 17:47, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Indeed. We can beat around the bush ourselves all we like, but without having an explanation of the rationale for deletion, we're just speculating. Wizardry Dragon 17:49, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

The template says "You may remove this message if you improve the article, or if you otherwise object to deletion of the article for any reason." I have improved the article and I otherwise object, so can I go ahead and delete the message???? SolMan 18:49, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the help and for the headings ("wikifying"). Greatly appreciated!SolMan 19:03, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

I also added in a club information box - please edit this as neccesary with correct information. If you need help with the jersey colours, just tell me the colours of the jersey and I can edit them in. Wizardry Dragon 19:06, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
