The Sons of AMVETS was founded with its first local Squadron in 1972 at Post 22 in Vermillion, OH. It only took 10 years to establish the reputation of the Sons, and the Sons were chartered with a National Department by the National Department of the AMVETS. The Sons of AMVETS are active in several of the AMVETS Programs, most particularly in the area of VA Voluntary Service. The Sons work closely with the AMVETS, Ladies Auxiliary and Junior AMVETS at all levels.

Today (as of the 2007 National Convention), the Sons have 17 chartered State Departments, with 300 over Squadrons and over 22,000 members. The Sons established their first permanent National Headquarters in Columbus Ohio in at the AMVETS building. This headquarters is located at 1395 E. Dublin Granville Rd. Suite #115, Columbus, OH 43229.

[edit] Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility for membership in the Sons of AMVETS shall be limited to all male descendents, grandsons, adopted sons and stepsons, fathers, husbands, widowers, and brothers of members of AMVETS and the deceased members of AMVETS, or the personnel who died and would have been eligible for membership in the parent organization, and are at least eighteen (18) years of age and is not eligible for membership in the parent organization. This is not to include in-laws of any type.

We, the Sons of AMVETS (American Veterans), fully realizing our responsibility to our parents, community, State and Nation, associate ourselves for the following purposes:

* To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America;
* To safeguard the principles of freedom, liberty and justice for all;
* To promote the cause of peace and goodwill amongst nations;
* To maintain the freedom of our country;
* To preserve the fundamentals of democracy;
* To perpetuate the friendships and associations of the AMVET organization; and
* To dedicate ourselves to the cause of mutual assistance...this by the
* Grace of God.

The Sons have chartered State Departments in Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia

In addition, they have Squadrons in a number of States that have not yet chartered State Departments. These include: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, North Dakota, Tennessee, and Washington among others.
