[edit] Creation and conception

[edit] Appearance

Goten's appearance at the start of the series is very similar to that of his father, Son Goku. This shows greatly in Goten's hair style, which is identical in shape and color to his father's. Goten also wears a gi similar to that of his father's, except with long navy sleeves instead of his father's short ones. At the end of the Majin Buu Saga, Goten takes on a different appearance which series creator Akira Toriyama explains was made because he didn't want Goten to be confused with his father.[2] This new appearance included a shirt that said "Son Goten" and a long shaggy hairstyle.[2]

[edit] Plot overview

Goten is first introduced at the beginning of the Majin Buu Saga as the second son of Son Goku, the series' protagonist.[3] Goten is soon trained by his older brother Son Gohan in preparation for the Tenkaichi Budokai, which Goten's father, Goku would be attending (Goku had died before Goten was born and was able to join the tournament due to being a good person while he was alive). During the training, Goten was revealed to be able to become a Super Saiyan.[4] During the tournament, Goten easily breezes through the kids division of the Tenkaichi Budokai, until he is beaten by Trunks, Goten's best friend and the son of Vegeta.

Later, Goten, along with Trunks, watches as the main villain of the Majin Buu Saga, Majin Boo fights Vegeta. Goten and Trunks attempt to assist a beaten Vegeta but are knocked out by Vegeta and taken away by Piccolo before Vegeta sacrifices himself in an attempt to defeat Boo. However these efforts are in vain, as Boo regenerates, after Vegeta dies from the aftershock of his attack.[5] In a last ditch effort to save the world, Goku along with the help of Piccolo, teaches Trunks and Goten Fusion, a technique that allows the two children to fuse into a more powerful warrior, Gotenks. Gotenks battles Boo multiple times but even when he transforms into a Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks' power is not enough to defeat Boo and he is eventually absorbed by Boo, making Boo stronger. Goten and Trunks are eventually rescued from Boo by Vegeta and Goku but they are killed after Boo destroys the Earth.[6] Goten is later brought back to life along with the rest of the Earth via the Dragon Balls in order to give energy to Goku's Genki Dama attack, which defeats Boo.[7] Goten then returns to a normal life on Earth.

In Dragon Ball GT, Goten particates in battles against other fictional supervillains such as the space parasite Baby, the artificial human Super 17 and the evil dragon, Yi Xing Long.

[edit] Abilities

Son Goten has many abilities that he has displayed throughout the series.

One of these abilities is the Kamehameha, a technique that concentrates chi energy and forms it into a beam.[8] Goten first displays this technique during the 25th Tenkaichi Budokai.

Goten also has the ability of Fusion, a technique that allows him to combine with a being of similar power and stature.[9] Goten uses this technique many times over the series with Trunks to combine into Gotenks.[10]

Goten has also displayed the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan, which changes his hair color a light shade of gold and boosts his power immensely.[4] Unlike many other saiyans in the series, Goten was able to reach this form at a very early age. The first transformation happened while training with his mother, for which he was called a "monster."[4]

Like many other characters in the series, Goten can shoot basic chi energy blasts as well perform Bukû-jutsu, a technique that allows the user to fly.[11]

[edit] Appearances in other media

Goten has appeared in various Dragon Ball-related video games such as Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2. In many of these games, the character Gotenks is also a playable character.

Goten has appeared in Dragon Ball Z movies #10, #11, #12, and #13. In two of the films, he fought the fabled Legendary Super Saiyan Broli.
