The Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge was created to raise money for Special Olympics Maryland to help 10,000+ athletes from around the state train and compete year-round. Volunteers "plunge" into the feezing Chesapeake Bay for donations to support Special Olympics.

The Plunge was founded in 1997 by Tom Schniedwind of Special Olympics Maryland and a member of the Maryland State Police Department. In its initial incarnation, 300 people "plunged" into the Chesapeake Bay at Sandy Point State Park and raised $70,000[1]. Each year the event has grown, culminating in a record crowd of 15,000 participants in 2007.

The next Plunge will take place on January 26, 2008, 9am at Sandy Point State Park, Annapolis, Maryland, USA.
