Solar Cup

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Solar Cup is a competition for high schools involving the construction of Solar Powered Electric boats and racing them on Lake Skinner outside of Temecula, California. Each participating school receives $3,000 from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and its member cities and water agencies. Boats are built from identical kits of marine-caliber wood provided by Metropolitan. Single-seat boats are 16 feet long, and weigh about 250 pounds. Solar Cup begins with sign up in December, and includes a boat-building event and several workshops focusing on technical aspects such as drive trains, electrical systems, solar power collection and steering systems. Teams are also required to meet deadlines for submitting illustrated reports on these systems. 2007 is the fifth year of the Solar Cup and contains a veteran and a rookie division that divides the competition between newcomers and schools that have participated before.

The competition is a scored event, divided up into several categories: Technical Reports, Workshops, Visual Displays, Qualifying Times, Endurance Distance, and Sprint Times. Combined, all of these categories add up for a 1000 maximum possible points. 41 teams competed in 2007.
