- Most capable software engineers can sort the disasters from the non-disasters, and entire books have been written about the disasters. Software that takes lives (Therac-25) or causes the loss of millions of dollars worth of materiel (Arianne 5) is pretty-easily characetrized as a disaster. One might debate (and we have) whether, for example, OS/360 is a disaster or not, but there are plenty of cases that are plenty clear.
