Society's Child
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking)" was a song written in 1966 by Janis Ian regarding the then-taboo subject of interracial romance. The narrator describes the humilaition her African American boyfriend receives from her mother and the taunts she endures from classmates and teachers, and her final decision to dump her boyfriend because of her inability to deal with the social pressure.
At first many radio stations refused to play the recording because of the controversial subject matter, but Ian was given a boost when Leonard Bernstein featured her performance of the song on a television special about the new pop music. "Society's Child" scored high on the American pop charts in 1967.
