Description

An old Social Security card with the "NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION" message.

The Social Security card is not intended to serve as a national identification card. Therefore, none of the revisions of the card prior to October 1983 contained security features and some revisions actually had "NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION" printed on the card. Social Security cards issued subsequent to October 1983 contain security features which include intaglio and microline printing and security planchettes in the paper. [1]
