SNCF 241P Class

The SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français) 241P Class is a mountain type 4-8-2 steam locomotive.

Thirty- five engines were built in 1948-52, first for service on the Paris-Lyons-Marseilles line then in the process of being electrified, to haul the heaviest express trains . They were withdrawn in 1969 after service on most of the SNCF main lines.

Some features: 4 cylinders compound, driving wheels 2 metre diameter, grate area 5.05 square metres, steam pressure 19.72 atmospheres, tractive effort 20,266 kg, coal capacity 12 tonnes, water capacity 34050 litres, length 27.1 metres, weight in working order: Locomotive : 129.3 tonnes, Tender : 82.7 tonnes .

Four 241P have been preserved. 2006 saw the come back to the tracks of the rebuilt 241P17. This engine, in working order, is authorized to run on SNCF tracks.
