Rowling released three chapter titles on her official website on October 31, 2004: Chapters two, six, and fourteen - called "Spinner's End", "Draco's Detour", and "Felix Felicis", respectively (mugglenet archive). According to a USA Today article, two men who had obtained a copy of the book by mistake reported the title of chapter 18 was "Birthday Surprises" [1]. There was also wide speculation regarding what Spinner's End was; most assumed it would be a location of some sort.

On July 12, the correct list of chapter titles with minor typographical errors was posted to alt.fan.harry-potter in message db1dgi0tjb@enews4.newsguy.com which noted it had already appeared on Ain't it Cool News before a cease and desist letter from the book's publishers led to its removal. A close paraphrase of the book's first sentence reached the newsgroup July 13, and key plot events of the book reached the newsgroup July 14, with a link to a webpage with a photograph of a page confirming one of them.

On jkrowling.com from June 2004, the author of the series responded to many recurrent rumours, creating a clearer picture for fans of where the series would not go in the next two books.

[edit] Harry Potter and the Toenail of Icklibõgg

In June 2004, J.K. Rowling on her website joked that the sixth book in the Harry Potter series would be called Harry Potter and the Toenail of Icklibõgg, in response to a hoax claiming that the sixth book would be called Harry Potter and the Pillar of Storgé. Later that day, Rowling announced the final title of the sixth book of the series.

[edit] The Half-Blood Prince

J. K. Rowling had announced in the title confirmation message that the Half-Blood Prince referred to in the book's title was neither Harry nor Voldemort. As Rowling is notorious for playing with words, some even suggested Tom Riddle was a candidate, arguing that he had already been referred to separately from "Voldemort" in the books. However, Rowling denied this as well.

There had been wide speculation about the identity of this character, with suggested names including every male character of any significance whatsoever in the books. Another rumour was that the Half-Blood Prince was Felix Felicis, one of the chapter titles that Rowling announced on her website.

The character Mark Evans—mentioned briefly at the beginning of Order of the Phoenix—had also been suggested, largely because Lily Potter's maiden name was "Evans" and fans could not believe that his name could be a coincidence. Rowling responded to this by saying his name is simply an accident and that he will not play a significant part in the story, though she admitted she had no one to blame but herself for fans noticing minor characters like him, since it was her own practice to mention characters in passing and have them play major roles later on.

Following Rowling's appearance at the Edinburgh Book Festival it was reported on MuggleNet that she revealed to two separate attendees that Hagrid was not the HBP. From that point on she ceased to provide further information on the character.

[edit] Assistant Professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts

A rumour was that Dumbledore would make Harry Assistant Professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts, infuriating Snape (and Malfoy, since it was Harry who put his father in prison).

Rowling responded: "I'm not sure I see Harry in an academic career, he's seen so much action."

Rowling had said that there would be a new Minister for Magic. The most popular candidate among fans was Arthur Weasley until she contradicted this possibility by saying "Alas, no" on her Web site. After this dismissal most fans believed that Amelia Bones would become the next Minister. Others speculated that Lucius Malfoy would step-up-to-the-plate by playing a few mind tricks, even though this was quite unlikely seeing as he was in prison.

On February 14th (Valentine's Day), a secret teaser image appeared in Bloomsbury's site's Harry Potter section [2]. It was accessible by clicking on the "14" tab in the site's calendar graphic, and depicted a heart with an arrow going through it, Harry's name on one side and a concealed name on the other side.

Naturally, fans were curious as to the identity of the shadowed person. As the issue of Harry's eventual girlfriend was heavily speculated about and discussed as it was, the speculation resulting from this teaser was essentially nothing new—suggesting mostly the three girls most commonly theorised to fill that role (Ginny, Hermione, and Cho).

Determined to figure the image out, some persistent fans had used graphic software to maximize the image's brightness and contrast, revealing the leftmost part of the overshadowed text to be a curve.

This did little to identify the mysterious hidden name at the time, or even to rule out any, since all theories were dependent on how the names were represented (first name? Last name? Which sort of Font? Et cetera). The meaning of the image remained unclear until the release, giving rise to a cynical interpretation of the image as completely trivial and serving no purpose but to create speculation and hype regarding romance in the series.

[edit] Character Death

On May 24, 2005, news sources reported that bookmakers who had been taking bets on what character would die in the book had stopped taking bets on Albus Dumbledore. This came about when a large number of £50 bets to that effect were received in the area of Bungay, site of a printing plant believed to be involved in the book's production. This BBC article about a leaked copy of the book also mentioned this rumour. The publishers have, however, denied that a leak could have occurred, given the tight security on all facilities involved in its publication.

Prior to the release, Rowling had revealed that:

  • Half-Blood Prince would almost be part one of a two-part book, with the second half being book seven; The war has begun and the saga is now moving toward the ultimate confrontation. However, this was not taken to mean that the book would not be a complete story in and of itself.
  • There would be a new character called McClaggan. Though his role remained unknown until the release, the fact that on the one hand Rowling had stated that she had heard the name and decided on a whim that she wanted to incorporate it but on the other hand she has had the entire series planned out beforehand pointed to his being a minor character.
  • Grawp, Hagrid's giant half brother, would be more controllable.

Information from other sources was that:

  • There would be a Hogwarts graveyard that would play an important part in the story, as Alfonso Cuarón mentions [3]
  • A Bloombury insider had been given information that the excerpt that was revealed on JKR's website was in the chapter "Felix Felicis". (Proved to be incorrect, the excerpt was from "The Other Minister")
  • The first printing by Scholastic for the sixth installment reached 10.8 million copies. By June 2005 Amazon.com had already sold 620,620 pre-orders for the book, and Amazon.co.uk 260,000.
  • On the complete children's cover various pictures were displayed, including a ring, boat, fountain (or possibly a pensieve) and two people with their hands locked together in an arm wrestling stance.
  • Since the newly released adult cover had a book on it titled Advanced Potion Making it was assumed that Harry would make it into Advanced Potions somehow.
