I am mildly obsessed with the television adaptations of Smiley's People and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. I watch the series probably about once every two months, always with immense pleasure. With a close friend, we track the careers of the people who played in the series (Ian Richardson, for example, who recently died), and I wish someday to create a map and travel guide of all the places in the two shows. I'm mystified, as is my friend, that more people don't talk or write about how great these shows were. The cinematography, for example, and its liquid blue effect. The scene where Smiley "interrogates" Toby Esterhase in a room with floral wallpaper as the world outside shifts its fictional and political orbit as a result of their conversation. I could go on -- and will some day.
