I was shocked to see that there was no discussion on this page about the language differences on Smith island as compared to the rest of the country: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=smith%20island I think that this is a very important part of the culture of Smith Island and should be included.

I have often heard comments regarding the dialect used by Smith Island residents. At the minimum it is an oversimplification. For one thing, there are several different dialects, ranging from minimal to very pronounced. While the Islanders were semi-secluded over the years, they still had a steady influx of new residents from the surrounding areas, their children received their secondary education in Crisfield, MD, twelve miles away on the mainland, and - like everyone else - have had radio and television for nearly one hundred years.
