Just as a comment, while smartguns as described in the article are common across science fiction (most famously Aliens, and also the "Across Realtime"story-arc by Vernor Vinge (although specifically, I think it was the bullets that were smart and chose their optimum firing time, rather than the gun), I can confirm that neither "Starship Troopers" nor "The Forever War" feature smartguns.
