There are some photographs which are so significant, that they reach the level of iconic images. Others become significant as chronicles of major events. Some become significant simply for being the standard refernce for an important person, event, or other entity.

When first published, it immediately sparked a wave of national interest almost immediately. The photgraph became the centerpiece of a National War Bonds drive in the United States

This is simply the photo of the first man on the Moon. It wins iconic status as the perfect merging of image and perception. the viewr's knowledge of the context gives the phot its inherent power.
