A Slippery Nipple shooter

The Slippery Nipple is a layered cocktail shooter most commonly composed of a Baileys Irish Cream and Sambuca. When prepared properly, the ingredients separate into two distinct visible layers. The layering is due to the relative densities of the ingredients. The Baileys takes the edge off the anise-flavored Sambuca.

It is unclear who concocted the drink or named it. The evidence suggests that it originated in the 1980s during a period of renewed popularity of cocktails and mixed drinks. This fad was criticized by New York Times writer William Grimes as "a kind of cult, rallying points for young drinkers in search of fun and not too picky about taste".^[1]

The name of the drink appears to have come about in order to shock people. Other drinks whose names were likewise derived include “silk panties”, “sex on the beach”, and “screaming orgasm”. There are, however, some vague common characteristics between the drink and an actual nipple.^[2] of a woman’s breast, such as the coloration and the milky taste and textural qualities. Also the visual effect of the tan-colored Irish cream atop the colorless Sambuca connotes a lubricated (i.e. slippery) breast. The addition of a cherry or a dash of grenadine to the drink further simulates the appearance to a breast nipple.

The most common version of the drink [1] consists of

½ shot of Sambuca
½ shot of Baileys

Pour the Sambuca into a conical shot glass, then carefully and slowly pour the Baileys down the side of the glass so that the two liquids do not mix and the Baileys floats atop the Sambuca. It takes a knack to do this. The Baileys can also be poured over an upside-down spoon to get it to float. Some recipes call for placing a cherry (the "nipple") in the bottom of the shot glass.

1/2 oz.	Irish Cream Liqueur
1 dash	Grenadine

Glass type: Shot
Directions: Put sambuca in a shot glass, layer in the irish cream. Place on drop of grenadine in the middle.

Slippery Nipple #3

Quantity	Ingredient
1 oz.	Sambuca
1/2 oz.	Irish Cream Liqueur
1/2 oz.	Vodka

Glass type: Cocktail
Directions: Put into a chilled cocktail glass in the order given.

1/2 oz.	Baileys Irish Cream
1/2 oz.	Butterscotch Schnapps

Glass type: Shot
Directions: Pour Baileys first and then float the schnapps on top.

Quantity	Ingredient
1/3 oz.	Irish cream (Baileys)
1/3 oz.	Butterscotch Schnapps
1/3 oz.	Kahlua (Coffee)

Glass type: Cocktail
Directions: Put the Irish cream in first. Then slowly pour the Kahlua down the side of the glass so it doesn't mix. Then add the Butterscotch Schnapps on top nice and slow.
